Harrogate District Summer Race League – Race 4 – Nidd Valley

This year’s final HDSRL was hosted by Nidd Valley Road Runners out of Harrogate Hockey Club.

As there was no handicap race this year Nidd Valley had the honour of hosting the finale which was well attended with 353 runners making up the field.

This race was the longest of the 4 races at just over 9km and took in a mixture of surfaces from pavement, grass, ploughed fields, trails and the converted railway line.

12 club runners made up the Vocalink team with Simon Williams finishing first with a time of 42:02 very closely followed by Nick Wagstaff in a time of 42:07

Keran Peters finished 3rd for the club and Alex Whapples took 4th spot. It was an excellent performance from both Keran and Alex who finished 1st and 3rd in their age group respectively.

After the race there was the usual food and drink whilst Nidd Valley had arranged for every runner to get a bottle of ale to cap off the season, which was a nice touch.

The event was very well organised and it was great to be cheered on by some familiar faces marshaling the route for Nidd Valley.

Individual season results will be out in due course but for now can I say well done to everyone who took part and represented the club over the summer.

Enjoy your events over the remainder of the summer and autumn, and lets look forward to running together next year!

Great Work!

J.P. Morgan Corporate Challenge, London

On Thursday 5th July a number of club runners were out to join in the J.P. Morgan Corporate Challenge at Battersea Park in London.

Steve Garlick, Martin Moulton, Ali How, Owen Hughes and Ros Bartlett joined a number of Mastercard colleagues on a warm evening on the South bank.

24,000 participants completed the 5.6km course either running or walking.

Steve Garlick reported back “It was a very well run event and it was great to meet up with a wide mix of Mastercard runners”

The J.P. Morgan Corporate Challenge is a series of 5.6km running events open to teams of Corporate runners only. No individual entries are allowed for this series.

Planning for 2019 is already underway and any one interested should keep an eye on the Grid in early 2019.

Harrogate District Summer Race League – Race 3 – Thirsk

Round 3 and its up to Thirsk on one of the hottest evenings of the year.

Following the relatively straight up and down of Ilkley 2 weeks ago, this time the route was a fast, flat pair of circuits requiring everyone to raise their game.

The evening featured the smallest line up of the series across all the teams with VocaLink fielding a team of 8 this time round.

Out in front was Alex Whapples finishing First for VocaLink closely followed by Keran Peters in Second place for the club. Luke Fitzgerald led the men home taking Third place for the club.

When asked about his experiences on the night Gareth Hardcastle was able to give his thumbs up – “yeah, it was nice!”

After the race the beautiful evening in North Yorkshire was topped off by the legendary buffet.

Round 4 is the final race of the series. Organised by Nidd Valley Road Runners its on Tuesday 17th July. Details can be found on the Race Calendar page.

Looking forward to seeing you there!

Run Harrogate 10K

A small number of club runners entered the inaugural Run Harrogate 10K organised by Harrogate Harriers on Sunday 1st July.

Following a shift from the usual Valley Gardens route, this years new look race took in the Crimple Valley with long sweeping down hills followed by drawn out up hills.

Highlights of the route had you leaving Harrogate Squash Club and out along Hookstone Drive to St John Fisher School, then back in towards the valley and down and through the Hookstone Trails. Round past Hornbeam business park and then down to Cripple Beck, up the other side through woods to Follifoot. You then carried on out past Rudding Park and then down and back up Rudding Lane, turning left and on past the Travellers Rest. Finally you had a steady uphill to the show ground, followed by a long drag up hill back to the Hookstone Trails and the finish at the Squash club.

It was a testing course in really hot conditions and everyone did themselves proud.

For VocaLink, Chris Laycock finished 20th overall and 2nd in his age group! Simon Williams chased him down in Second position for VocaLink.

Alex Whapples took Third spot for the club finishing 9th female overall and 3rd in her age group!

David Whapples and Jonathan Spark completed the line up swapping positions a number of times before David stretched out his lead for Forth spot.

It was an excellent event which was very well organised and had a BBQ, stalls, music and bouncy castles for family’s staying after.

Definitely one to add to the calendar for 2019.

Harrogate District Summer Race League – Race 2 – Skipton

Round 2 of the HDSRL had us assembled at Ilkley Rugby club on a glorious warm evening.

The route this time round was just over 5miles comprising of a long drag up a single hill then a traverse along the ridge followed by a long downhill, finishing with a run along the river which offered a deceptive incline all the way back in to the rugby club.

First of the Vocalink team to finish was Michael Barlow crossing the line over 2minutes clear from Steve Peters with a time of 34:12.

Of those who were running their second race of the summer everyone enjoyed improved finishing times.

Next round is at Thirsk on Thursday 5th July, details on the Race Calendar page.
